First Impressions of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, S24+, and S24: A New Era of AI Phones

With AI, is Samsung able to reinvent the flagship smartphone experience?

Samsung is integrating AI capability directly into smartphones. Under the "Galaxy AI" banner, the company's most recent Galaxy S24 series smartphones are loaded with a plethora of potent and extremely helpful AI-powered capabilities. While the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, S24+, and S24 all have significant hardware enhancements, the focus will be entirely on Galaxy AI.

The new Galaxy S24 series smartphones, with its on-device AI and stronger native integration of its Galaxy AI capabilities, will simplify people's lives and pave the way for an entirely new generation of "AI phones."

Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 were on display for us to see at Samsung's inaugural Galaxy Unpacked event of the year. Let me take you through all of the recent changes.

Artificial Intelligence wizardry within your phone

We should quickly discuss the "Galaxy AI" capabilities that are standard across the recently released Galaxy S24 lineup before moving on to the smartphones. Samsung has improved photography, streamlined communication, and enhanced information search with a suite of AI-powered capabilities. There is no need to install third-party programs because these functions are included directly within the default apps.

Live Translate provides real-time, two-way phone call translation services for text and voice. It utilizes on-device AI to protect privacy and functions directly within the built-in calling app. It's as if ChatGPT was integrated into the messaging app with Chat Assist. It can assist you in crafting messages according to your needs, such as transforming an informal text message into a formal, well-polished one. AI is used by Samsung Keyboard to translate messages in 12 different languages, including Hindi, in real time.

Integrated inside the Notes app, Note Assist leverages generative AI to generate covers, summarize content, and more. With the help of Google, you may search for pertinent answers by highlighting or circling anything on your screen and using Circle to Search.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

The flagship Galaxy S lineup's most feature-rich and expensive smartphone is still Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra. In comparison to its predecessor, the Galaxy S24 Ultra now has a smaller body and a redesigned titanium frame. The 6.8-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display that comes with it has even and somewhat thinner bezels. The display has a peak brightness of 2,600 nits and an adaptive rate of refresh of 120 Hz. Corning Gorilla Armor, which claims to reduce distortions by up to 75% while safeguarding the display from tiny scratches, is applied to the front panel.

Continuing from the previous year, Samsung is increasing its efforts to be environmentally friendly by utilizing 100% recycled rare earth components in its speakers and 50% reused cobalt in the batteries of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. By 2030, Samsung wants every mobile module it offers to include at least one recycled component in it.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform for Galaxy powers the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Similar to last year, Samsung has obtained a customized version of Qualcomm's most recent processor, which offers improved NPU performance for more effective AI processing on the device. To control heat, the Galaxy S24 Ultra has a bigger vapour chamber. The high-end smartphone will come with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB of storage space in addition to 12GB of RAM.

With four rear cameras—a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, a 200-megapixel wide, a 50-megapixel telephoto, and a 10-megapixel telephoto—the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has a quad camera configuration. You get the same 12-megapixel camera for video calls and selfies. A set of AI-powered tools is providing a significant software-based capability boost for the camera setup.

A plethora of generative AI features have been implemented by Samsung to greatly simplify photo editing for everyday consumers. AI will enable you to remaster photos, reposition objects, and recompose images. Samsung is transparent about the dangers of utilizing AI in imaging. Every time you use generative AI to alter an image, a watermark is appended to the picture and included in the metadata. The majority of these AI-powered photo-editing features are compatible with all Galaxy S24 models.

Regarding battery life, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra retains its 5,000mAh battery that supports Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 and 45W rapid charging. The phone comes pre-installed with One UI 6.1, which is based on Android 14. Available colors for the Galaxy S24 Ultra include Titanium Gray, Titanium Black, and Titanium Yellow colour options.

Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+ smartphones

Every year, the Ultra model in the flagship series garners the most attention, while those seeking a more budget-friendly flagship experience choose to opt for the Plus or the vanilla variant. However, this year's sophisticated AI-powered capabilities also add a lot of excitement to the standard S series models.

The 6.7-inch QHD+ and 6.2-inch full-HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X screens on the Samsung Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 have a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz. The phones are IP68 certified for dust and water resistance, and the displays are shielded by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus Armor. The colors Onyx Black, Marble Gray, Cobalt Violet, and Amber Yellow will be offered for the Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24. According to Samsung, all Galaxy S24 series phones will come with extra color options that are only available to online shoppers.

A 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 50-megapixel wide camera, a 10-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 12-megapixel front camera make up the camera configuration on both devices. Additionally, the ProVisual Engine suite of AI-powered editing capabilities is available on the Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24.

In contrast to the Galaxy S24, which will come with 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage, the Samsung Galaxy S24+ will come with 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage out of the box. Notable improvements over the Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23, the former has a 4,900mAh battery, while the latter will have a 4,000mAh battery. One UI 6.1, based on Android 14, will also be available for both phones.

Samsung is establishing the benchmark for the upcoming generation of AI-powered smartphones with its early debut. With numerous hardware and software enhancements as well as on-device AI, Samsung's Galaxy S24 series smartphones appear to be highly promising. Will the anticipation be met by them? Will they stay at the top of their category for the remainder of the answers and a lot more for you in our in-depth review. Stay tuned to Gadgets 360 for more.
